Workout is working out

I've changed my philosophy with the workout routine and it's allowed me to get more done in less time. Today was a continuation of that philosophy as I tried something new with the treadmill portion of my workout. I can now get the two miles done in 30 minutes! It's not easy, but I found that if I alternate between 3.5mph and 5.0mph, I can do it. When I'm done I'm all sweaty and achey but damn it feels good.
Additionally, I no longer count the number of repetitions when I weightlift. I now keep doing reps until it hurts really bad because I learned something new- when you lift past the point of pain, you make little breaks in the fibers of your muscle. Your body will heal them up and make them stronger the next time. It's working out really well!

You really need to look into that more because weightlifting instructors teach you that lifting "past the point of pain" can cause injury. "No pain, no gain" is a known myth of exercising.

I'm not sure who told you that or where you read it, but I wouldn't lift until it "hurts very badly," you will just end up hurting yourself.

I guess what I mean is that I do reps until my arms are so tired I can't do any more. It's not that it really hurts, just that I can't do more reps because my arms are too tired.

However, I realize that since my goal is weightloss right now I shouldn't be strength training- it's causing me to gain weight actually :( so I'm gonna re-evaluate my regiment.

Please keep lifting. Bigger muscles may mean you "gain weight" but more muscle mass means your body will burn more calories just to maintain itself -- which means you will lose fat faster!

Count your reps -- once you can do three sets of about 8 or 12 reps at a certain weight, try bumping the weight up a bit higher your next time lifting.
